Financial pressures in festivals

Festival organisers face concentrated risk: a large share of annual income depends on a small number of event dates. Ticket receipts may already be committed to artists, site hire and infrastructure when sales slow or costs rise.

  • Advance ticket sales and booking-platform settlements
  • Artist, site and production cancellation terms
  • Insurance, safety commitments and weather exposure

What to review before deciding

Build a go/no-go cash forecast for the event using actual ticket sales rather than hoped-for demand. Separate money held by ticketing partners from accessible funds. Record cancellation costs and the resources needed to communicate clearly with ticket holders and suppliers.

Rescue, repayment and closure options

The first question is whether the underlying business can meet its ongoing costs after realistic changes. A business rescue review can examine margins, creditor discussions and the resources needed to keep delivering work. Where tax arrears are part of the problem, HMRC Time to Pay depends on an acceptable, affordable proposal; approval is not guaranteed.

For a suitable limited company, a Company Voluntary Arrangement or administration may warrant consideration. If recovery is not viable, read about Creditors’ Voluntary Liquidation. Formal appointments require a licensed insolvency practitioner. The right route depends on the legal structure, jurisdiction and facts, not the sector label alone.

Prepare for a confidential discussion

Bring recent accounts, a current bank balance and a list of overdue payments. For festivals, also prepare records covering advance ticket sales and booking-platform settlements; artist, site and production cancellation terms; insurance, safety commitments and weather exposure. Identify any payment demand, hearing or other deadline at the start of the conversation.

Ask for the proposed scope of work, likely fees and any assumptions in writing before agreeing to a paid service. An initial enquiry does not commit you to a procedure. Complete the enquiry form or call 01246 912052 to explain the position.

Festivals: common questions

A refund is not guaranteed in an insolvency. The ticket contract, payment method and available funds matter. Direct customers to accurate information rather than promising an outcome that has not been established.

That creates another delivery obligation and may worsen the funding gap. Obtain advice on viability and creditor interests before launching further sales.

Check the actual policy, exclusions, insured event and claims process. Do not include an uncertain insurance recovery as immediately available cash in the rescue forecast.
