Financial pressures in self-employed businesses

If you trade as a sole trader, the business is not a separate limited company. Stopping work does not itself remove debts, and company liquidation is not the procedure for closing a sole-trader business.

  • Personal responsibility for business debts
  • Self Assessment, VAT and final payroll matters
  • Equipment, household finances and ongoing customer work

What to review before deciding

Start by confirming the legal structure and listing personal and business liabilities together where appropriate. Prepare an affordable household budget as well as a trading forecast. HMRC must be told when self-employment stops, and final tax obligations still need attention.

Debt advice and stopping trading

Start with an assessment of your personal liability and what you can afford after essential household and business costs. Do not choose a company procedure simply because a website describes it as a way to close a business.

If tax payments are a problem, explore HMRC debt guidance. An affordable repayment proposal needs to allow for current liabilities as well as arrears. Individual insolvency and debt remedies depend on where you live and your circumstances.

Prepare for a confidential discussion

Bring recent accounts, a current bank balance and a list of overdue payments. For self-employed businesses, also prepare records covering personal responsibility for business debts; self assessment, vat and final payroll matters; equipment, household finances and ongoing customer work. Identify any payment demand, hearing or other deadline at the start of the conversation.

Ask for the proposed scope of work, likely fees and any assumptions in writing before agreeing to a paid service. An initial enquiry does not commit you to a procedure. Complete the enquiry form or call 01246 912052 to explain the position.
